A few people have been asking me about installing English Windows on
the Libretto and other sub-notebook PCs. Here's one way, not needing
a CD-ROM,
but using a Toshiba / Sony boot FDD.

When i install English windows I may not use the CD-ROM:

in the original Japanese windows:

1# partition the HDD giving about 650MB space on the spare partition.
This can be done using e.g. Partition Magic.
NOTE: ALL sony laptops have the HDD partitioned by Sony in the factory

2# copy the install files from your English Windows CD
(either using a LAN conected to another PC with CD-ROM or CD-ROM
drive attached to the sub-notebook).

3# boot from the FDD (with the Libretto series hold down "F" while
booting) using the English Windows floppy disk(s), on most Sony PCs = go into the bios and make a FDD / optical drive bootable

4# format C-drive (get rid of the Japanese OS) Type FORMAT C:\
(use partition software or FDISK to delete the recovery partition if one exists = save 2 to 5GB space on your HDD

5# install windows from the 650MB partition ( D-drive )

This next part depends on your chosen English OS
Win 9x or ME : type SETUP from D:\ (the exact folder will vary with versions)
win 2K or XP : type WINNT when in the D:\i386\ folder

6# (optional) when installation is complete remove the 650MB
partition.
On this partition you could keep a Hard Disk Image of windows basic install (C:\ - Drive)
- use Ghost or similar program)

NOTES:
Partition of Hard Disk on request is a free service offered to anyone who buys
a sub-notebook from Conics.Net

I use and ship only Toshiba or Sony USB FDD, I have tested some others,
and most DO NOT allow you to start from a floppy disk in DOS. so you'll have to use option 2 (on this page) if you don't wawnt to buy another drive

If you don't have a CD-Rom you will need a LAN or LAN card

PartitionMagic 7.0 -- Powerquest; Windows 95 / 98 / NT / 2000 / Me /
XP at Amazon.com Price: $54.99 (the download version is best for this application - price may have changed)

Other Partition software can also be used.

Some partition software maybe "shareware" and can be downloaded from Tucows (I haven't looked there for a while).
